PRAYER FOR THE BEGINNING OF A NEW TERM
Almighty God We give you our school.
We give you all the teachers and staff who work here,
We give you all the children who learn here.
We pray our school will continue to be a place of great discovery, adventure and creativity.
May it be a place where we love to learn and where we learn to love,
A place where every one is respected and all are deeply valued.
We ask all this through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back to Term Three. I hope you had a relaxing two weeks and were able to stay warm and enjoy some quality family time. This term we welcome the Camden Family and the Trihn Family to our school.
In Week 10, Term 2, I had the pleasure of travelling with Year 6 and their teachers to Canberra. It was a wonderful learning experience for the students. The children represented the school exceptionally and staff were extremely proud of their participation over the three days.
Parent Teacher Interviews will be held in Week 4 and is an essential part of your child’s learning progress and the partnership between home and school. It is an expectation that every family is involved in the process of meeting with class teachers throughout the year. By meeting your child’s teacher in this process, you are demonstrating to your child the importance you put on your child’s education. Bookings have been available on Compass.
NAPLAN results for Years 3 & 5 were delivered to school and sent out to parents last Wednesday. We have some excellent results across the school. If you have any concerns about these results, or wish to ask any questions, do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher. Please note that NAPLAN is just one form of assessment completed in one week back in March. Teachers have many other assessments that often paint a more complete picture of your child’s progress.
This week we were fortunate to have Andrew Chinn complete faith music workshops with our students across the school. To end the visit, Andrew led a whole school concert for our students. The students enjoyed the experience and were all engaged participating with enthusiasm. Andrew always brings so much joy to the school community making a faith experience through music so enriching and full of fun.
Yesterday, Years 5 and 6 attended a matinee performance of Aspire. Aspire is the annual diocesan creative arts performance. This year’s musical is ‘Disconnected’ is being held at the Civic Theatre. What a beautiful celebration of the talented performers of our diocese and a great experience for our students! Tickets are available through the Civic Theatre for Friday and Saturday night this weekend.
Bike Safety
It is great to have so many bike riders at our school. Please remind students to be safe when riding on the road and entering and exiting our school.
Bike riders should walk bikes out of the school and until the teacher on duty gives instruction for students to mount bikes. Students on bikes should ride to their destination safely and not congregate in areas on the pathways. Students should be mindful of others using the pathways and space where they ride.
Tree Safety
Can parents and carers at afternoon pick up please be mindful when waiting on the grassed area. We have been contacted by some of our neighbours who have concerns about excess amounts of bark coming off the trees. Thank you for you help with this.
100 Days of Kinder
What a wonderful celebration for our Kindergarten students. It was lovely to see all the students dressed up and getting into the spirit of the day. Considering how much everyone aged on this day, all the ‘100’ theme activities were completed and enjoyed by all. Thank you to the teachers and staff for organising this event for our Kinder cohort.
NAIDOC
Thank you to Mrs Frost for organising a great Indigenous cultural learning experience for all our students. The day was filled with a great variety of activities for all grades.Well done to all students for your involvement in the day.

This Sunday’s gospel is from John 6:24-35
“So when the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they themselves got into the boats and went to Capernaum looking for Jesus.
When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you come here?” Jesus answered them, “Very truly, I tell you, you are looking for me not because you saw signs but because you ate your fill of the loaves. Do not work for the food that perishes but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For it is on him that God the Father has set his seal.” Then they said to him, “What must we do to perform the works of God?” Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.” So they said to him, “What sign are you going to give us, then, so that we may see it and believe you? What work are you performing? Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’ ” Then Jesus said to them, “Very truly, I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” They said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.”
Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”
This dialogue reveals the crowd’s blindness. They ask for what Jesus has just told them they have found. Jesus answers plainly that he himself is the Bread of Life they seek. Jesus himself is the Bread of Life who will satisfy every hunger and thirst. This statement is repeated in different ways throughout John’s Gospel. We understand these better when we remember that God revealed his name to the people of Israel as “I am,” as Yahweh. Jesus is now claiming this name for himself.
Religious Literacy
The Year 6 students will undertake the Diocesan Religious Literacy Test on Monday 19th August. This test allows us to assess how well we embed Religious Literacy throughout our teaching of Religion. Religious Literacy is taught across Kindergarten to Year 6 through each of our Religion modules.
What is Religious Literacy?
Religious literacy plays a crucial role in promoting cultural understanding and fostering inclusive societies. In schools, religious literacy enables students to develop a comprehensive understanding of different beliefs, values, and practices, enhancing their ability to engage respectfully with diverse communities. By teaching about various religions, schools can nurture empathy, tolerance, and critical thinking skills, empowering students to challenge stereotypes and combat prejudice. Moreover, religious literacy equips young individuals with the knowledge to navigate an increasingly globalized world, facilitating meaningful dialogue and cooperation across religious and cultural boundaries. By integrating religious literacy into educational curricula, schools contribute to creating a more harmonious and interconnected society that values diversity and mutual respect.
As for all key learning areas, including English, Maths and Science, we need to be literate to understand the core teachings of each subject. We need to be literate in Religious Education as it is one of the distinguishing features of a Catholic School therefore the Diocese has put a spotlight on this as part of the diocesan wide strategic plan. In subsequent newsletters I will provide information about the core teachings the students are learning in Religion and some practical ways that you could support you child in this area.

Andrew Chinn Workshops and Concert-31st July
What a great time was had by all students, teachers and all those who attended the afternoon concert. The students had the opportunity to participate in song and movement based around our Catholic faith. The hall was filled some amazing singing and the joy that emanated was so uplifting. As a school we will continue to use the wonderful music resources that Andrew provides through Butterfly House, his online platform. Check out the images below!
Mrs Patricia Miller
Religious Coordinator
Welcome back to Term 3, it is amazing how the school year is flying by. The last 2 weeks have seen the children experience a range of activities and opportunities. I had the pleasure of accompanying Stage 3 students to the ASPIRE production ‘Disconnected” yesterday. It was great to see past St James students on stage and I encourage all students with talent and an interest in the arts to consider being a part of ASPIRE in the future.
Parent/Teacher Conferences
Thank you to those families who have made their bookings for the P/T conferences in Week 4. I will be closing the bookings on WEDNESDAY 7th August. This allows teachers time to prepare for the meetings.
ICAS
We have had an amazing response to the number of students willing to participate in ICAS this year. These assessments will start next week. Should your child be away on the day of the assessment, I will be able to catch them up however, it needs to be within the exam week scheduled by ICAS. Tests are all online, therefore please ensure students from grades 4 – 6 have charged their devices and have their headphones. Younger students will use Library devices but please bring in headphones.

Pedagogical Mentors and Staff PLT’s
This week staff spent time in their Professional Learning Teams (PLT’s) reflecting on our agreed practises, scope and sequences, programs and assessments in Mathematics. On the Monday of week 1 we spent the morning with Mrs Louise Robertson from the Catholic Schools Office. Staff were then able to conduct Learning walks and talks across the school and enjoyed learning from each other. Next week Mrs Menser and myself will visit Our Lady of Victories in Shortland for a networking day for Pedagogical Mentors.
Rail Safety
Thank you to Agnes and James who visited out school today to spread the important message of Rail safety. Rail Safety Week is an annual community awareness week held in Australia and New Zealand designed to engage the community in safe rail practices. https://tracksafefoundation.com.au/event/rail-safety-week/
Regardless of where we live, it’s crucial we know how to be safe on and around rail. This year’s Rail Safety Week is 5-11 August 2024.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Mrs Debra Petersen
Assistant Principal
NSWPSSA Cross Country
Wil M travelled to the Sydney Equestrian Centre last week to participate at the NSWPSSA Championships. There were around 100 boys in Wil’s event, and he finished in 42nd place. This is a remarkable achievement Wil to represent at such a high level. Congratulations!

We also wish Addison the best of luck for her NSWPSSA Netball Championships in Week 4 in Penrith. Good luck to you all, we cannot wait to hear about your fantastic experiences.
Mrs Tegan Fry & Miss Renee Pettet
Sports Organisers
Throughout Term 3 we are focusing on the Resilient pillar of our PBL matrix. Resilience is the capacity to withstand challenges and the ability to recover quickly from them. For our children it’s about how well they are able to bounce back from a tricky situation.
Throughout weeks 3 & 4 we will be exploring the expectation of “Be honest”. As a community we consider how important being honest is. Sometimes being honest can be challenging but it is always best to be honest to keep ourselves and others safe.
When we are honest, we give ourselves opportunities to grow or strengthen friendships. We can show this action through:
- being honest at home, at school and in the wider community
- owning our mistakes and telling the truth
- understanding that telling the truth is a positive action to a situation
- respecting the feelings of others
- knowing it’s okay to make mistakes
- working collaboratively towards solving the problem.
Our new B Block
I’m delighted to share this artist impression image, featuring the design of our new B block and Library building.
Our school is in the midst of a range of property upgrades and improvements and it’s exciting to see what the future will hold for our students.
New Mezzanine Year 6 classroom
Across the school holidays works were carried out to create a great new mezzanine learning space in our school hall. Our Year 6 students have moved in this Term and are loving the new, large learning space. Year 3 have also settled into their new classroom space close to the COLA and play areas.
Temporary Learning Support Centre
This move has also allowed for the set up of our new Learning Support Centre next to the new Year 3 classroom, while the building works continue.
I’d like to congratulate our students for their flexibility and positive attitudes as we adapt to changes in our school environment.
Construction update
As notified via Compass at the end of the school holidays, as part of the early construction works unforeseen bonded asbestos materials were found. Immediate precautions to secure the building site with geofabric, and now additional signage, have been taken.
As you are aware, the site is already cordoned off with no public or school community access. At all times, the safety and wellbeing of our community is our priority and we are committed throughout the construction works to implement safety measures above and beyond the legal requirements.
Our external experts continue to determine a long-term strategy for remediating the site which will be finalised in the coming weeks. Their recommended action plan will manage any risks to the site and as always, I will continue to keep you updated.
I thank you for your patience and understanding during this construction and upgrade period.

Thank you to our P & F
Our first order of business is to acknowledge and thank our wonderful P & F Association for their incredibly generous funding of new books for our Library Collection.
We have recently surveyed our Years Four, Five and Six students with regard to their current reading preferences. While our current collection had many reading resources the students were looking for, there were new authors and titles that our students were very keen to access. Accordingly our School Principal, Mrs Boslem, presented our Survey findings to the P & F and they were very quick to respond in funding a wide range of new reading resources.
An additional benefit at this stage is that we can make these new purchases available to students immediately they are acquired.
Events in Term 3
Term 3 is the stage of the school year where many Library-based activities are held and/or completed.
We will be celebrating the 2024 Book Week from August 19 to 23rd.
Our Book Week Parade will therefore be held on Tuesday 20th of August and as promised we will be repeating our Vocabulary themed Parade on this day.
But stop the press, the St James Book Fair will also be held in the St James School Hall on Tuesday the 20th of August.
By combining The Book Week Parade and the Annual Book Fair on the same day, we will be providing Parents, Grandparents and care- givers an opportunity to witness our always entertaining Book week parade, but also to support their Child’s reading with an opportunity to purchase new release books at discounted prices.
Library Operations Update
As you are all aware we have undergone significant change with regard to our Library practices now that the building housing the St James School Library has been prepared for demolition.
Allow me to reassure you that our St James School Library borrowing will continue albeit with some significant challenges.
A great number of our books have been put into storage. They will be available to us on a rotational basis as our capacity to display all of our collection is now limited by available space in each individual classroom. Periodically, the books in storage will be taken out of storage and stored in classrooms for students to access and borrow. The books currently in classrooms will be then stored.
While not perfect, this is the solution that has been settled on in order to provide a variety of reading resources for our students under less than ideal circumstances throughout the construction phase of our new Library.
It is for this reason that I have been providing details with regard to accessing E-Books through the SORA App. Please see those details provided again below.
St James Library and borrowing goes Digital
A few years ago our St James School Library was updated to a digital borrowing system called Oliver. One of the great features of Oliver is that it allows the borrowing of E- Books through the St James School Library. The Oliver based collection has thousands of E-Books available for St James students to borrow. This is done through the SORA app which you need to download.
Anyone needing assistance to access Oliver or Sora can contact me via email:

Premiers Reading Challenge
August 23rd marks the official end to the Premiers Reading Challenge {PRC} for 2024. Please see below students who have already qualified for the 2024 Premiers Reading Challenge Certificate.
We have numerous students who are also close to completing the requirements to receive a Premiers Reading Challenge Certificate and wish to remind them that they have plenty of time to read and then register the books they have read.
We are delighted to report that the following students have already satisfied the requirements for the 2024 Premiers Reading Challenge.
Andrew P - Grade 2
Matilda E - Grade 3
Lachlan H - Grade 3
Alex P - Grade 3
Evie L - Grade 5
Laura P - Grade 5
Oliver L - Grade 6
Layla R - Grade 6.
Congratulations to these students, they will receive their PRC Certificates later in the year.
Since we were able to compile and announce these Certificate qualifiers, we have had many students complete their reading lists and therefore congratulate the following students who will also receive their Premiers Reading Challenge Certificates later in the year.

For the other students participating there is still plenty of time as the closing date is August 23rd.
In a new initiative to assist our Kindergarten and Year 1 students, I have undertaken to read 20 Premiers Reading Challenge listed books to the students within library lessons. This is all of the Premiers Reading Challenge books required to satisfy the challenge requirements. If parents can read 10 other books to their student [these 10 books do not have to be Premiers Reading Challenge listed books] then that will satisfy both categories and your student will receive a Premiers Reading Challenge Certificate at the end of the year.
I will email a list of the Premiers Reading Challenge listed books that I have read to the students of Kindergarten and Year 1so that your individual logs can be completed prior to the cut-off on August 23rd.
The reason I am doing this is to establish with our younger students that qualifying for the Premiers Reading Challenge every year throughout their schooling at St James is a worthwhile and pleasurable endeavor.
I have included the PRC guideline below for those parents new to the school. If you have any questions or queries please do not hesitate to contact myself or Mrs Churches.
Last year we were very proud to present over seventy Premiers Reading Challenge certificates to our students as well as Five Gold certificates to students who have earned and received four consecutive annual certificates. We are very keen to eclipse this amazing achievement in 2024.
Importantly, please be advised that the Premiers Reading Challenge log-in is the same every year. The log in received in kindergarten continues throughout the schooling of the student. It does not get renewed or changed. If you have lost access to the Premiers Reading Challenge Log-in for your child, please contact Mr Coleman, Mrs Churches or Mrs Farley.
Also, please note that this year’s kindergarten students have been issued with their log-in details at the start of this term via email

Screen Time and Learning
There is a huge amount of research around the impact of screen time on children’s brains, particularly executive function.
Executive function governs:
- Impulse control
- Emotional regulation
- Planning
- Focusing attention
- Following instructions
- Learning
- Managing multiple tasks effectively
Latest Research indicates
- A longitudinal study published in 2020 looked at cognitive and emotional functioning in children over time, between age 4 and 8, measured against their daily screen time. The study found excessive screen time led to emotional dysregulation and negatively affected mathematics and literacy in school-age students. Cerniglia et al. (2020b)
- In 2021, Denise Scairpon published a dissertation on screen timeamong 4- and 5-year-old children and its effect on their social and emotional development as well as their sleep. The most significant finding: Excessive use of digital devices (more than 2 hours a day) may cause children to suffer from irreversible damage to their developing brains and limit their ability for school success.
- Children’s games are also increasingly problematic. The games are developed to be “addictive” by increasing dopamine in the brain when they achieve/ score levels, leading to children wanting more and more time on the game. Radesky et al. (2015) believed “the design of modern technologies is purposefully habit-forming and programmed with the sort of variable rewards that keep humans engaged”
Learning Support Teacher
NED’s Mindset Mission is a positive behaviour programme. A world-class performer takes our students on an interactive educational journey filled with storytelling, illusions, yo-yo tricks and humor. NED’s message and memorable friends inspire students, promote academic achievement, and support our school goals.
During the holidays we received more great news about our Year 5 students. Congratulations to Theodore M and Eli M who received commendations in the Young Voices Awards, a competition sponsored by the Australian Catholic University. The competition required students to speak up on an issue they are passionate about through mediums such as photography, digital (videos or podcasts) or writing. Eli received a highly commended award and Theodore received a special commendation in the junior digital category. Both boys will have their names published in The Australian Catholics Magazine. We are very proud of all our students who took time to enter this competition.
P & F Meeting
The next meeting is Monday 5th August at 7:00pm in the Parish Hall, all welcome.
Canteen
There has been Food Safety Changes for all school canteens. If you are a volunteer in the school canteen, can you please follow the below link to ensure compliance of the new NSW Government Food Authority Standard 3.2.2A.

Playgroup
Thank you to our parents for the support and value that you place on your child being at school each day. Regular school attendance plays a critical role in ensuring that every student has access to the same learning opportunities. When students are not at school, are late to school or leave school early, they are missing out on so much that can impact on their future learning.
The following Attendance Guidelines are based on current legislative requirements, research on attendance and best practice.
✔ Attendance affects a child’s academic achievement and their overall wellbeing.
✔ There is NO safe threshold of absence – everyday counts.
✔ School attendance patterns are established early in a child’s schooling
✔ The effects of school absenteeism accumulate over time and affect children’s development now and into the future.
✔ Daily punctuality is important. The early part of each day is critical. Important learning is scheduled during this time when children are rested and receptive. Key concepts are built up in the time.
✔ Sporadic absences can affect academic achievement as much as absences over consecutive days.
✔ We ALL need to work together with our children’s best interest in mind to ensure that students are at school every day that they are well enough to attend.
Compass Unexplained Absences
Unexplained absences are required to be explained within 7 days of the absence on Compass. A weekly email will be sent to parents to alert of any unexplained absences that can be updated on Compass. Please note that if the absence is longer than 7 days, the absence is then unable to be explained by parents or school.
Complaints and Grievances
The CSO has formal written protocols in place to address complaints and grievances. These protocols are in line with the Diocesan Complaints Resolution Policy, developed to provide a consistent approach for all diocesan schools. This policy aims to address the concerns of parents and carers and the wider community. These concerns may include children’s learning, behaviour and welfare, school organisation and management, student health and safety issues.
To lodge a complaint with the Catholic Schools Office please click here.
You can access the Catholic Schools Office Complaints and Resolutions Policy and resources here.
